In the US there is a game called soccer, that is called football everywhere else, so football in America needs to be called American football. American football is the only game, where eleven players for each team must be on the field for every play. It takes many players to make an American football, even though only eleven play at any one time. Competition to be selected to join a football team can be very tough depending on the available pool to choose from.
At the high school level, that means smaller schools will usually accept almost all who try out, within reason. But larger schools can be very different, and successfully getting chosen to join is not often a given. How to play each position is a good thing to know, especially in understanding the total game.
Behind each line, offensive or defensive, is the backfield. So with the defensive backfield you have the linebackers. These positions are usually seen between the defensive backs and the main defensive line.
Linebackers are the most versatile players on the defense, needing to be both big and fast. Defensive backs are there to stop whatever the linemen and linebackers miss, making them the last line of defense. While the defensive backs stop the run sometimes, their main job is to keep passes from being completed. During pass plays , it is the responsibility of the defensive backs to keep the receivers from catching the passes thrown by the quarterback.
There are many rules that govern how the game is played whether at the collegiate or professional level. The number one rule for the defense before the ball is set in play by the offense is to not cross the line of scrimmage. The focus of every ballplayer is to make sure they know who to watch once the ball is in motion. After the huddle, the play that is called will determine where each player will go and what they will do. Although the names of players and their positions have changed, you need to know what your job is regardless. If you are on the defense, you're only allowed to do certain things per your position on the field. All players are required to know all of the plays that can be called during the huddle so they can get the job done.
Both teams are given the time to make alterations, if necessary, subsequent to all first downs. For every new and different change in the game, a different tactic will be applied. The matter of game strategies is a highly charged subject of conversation and can be either involved or easy. What you will typically find is a play book filled with perhaps dozens of possible plays, or much more. Theoretically, there is a play, or multiple, for practically any scenario that can occur in a game. While some plays could be dangerous, there are others that are reasonably protected.
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get ready for the football season which is why most of them start early. High school football is very competitive requiring the players practice every day after school. Being competitive at that age has been criticized by many experts because of the stress it puts the students under. Though unimaginable a decade ago, steroid use is on the rise with high school athletes that are conditioned to train.
